Downtown Cambridge’s electric vehicle charging stations officially launched August 7 with a ribbon cutting and demonstration event. Cambridge is the first Main Street community in Maryland to install public chargers, which include three Tesla destination units and one ClipperCreek universal unit.

Downtown Cambridge hopes the chargers will encourage electric vehicle drivers to stop and refuel more than just their car. “It’s an opportunity to encourage new faces to travel downtown and have a look around, possibly visit our brewery, shops, and restaurants” shared Katie Clendaniel, Executive Director for Downtown Cambridge. “It also gives us a chance to gather more data about their impact and how this type of amenity may help support business and investment in our district, possibly helping to justify investment in additional units in other areas of the downtown and the City.” Volunteers from the organization’s Streetscape and Design Team, led by Brian Roche, helped coordinate the project.

Black Water Bakery donated space in their centrally-located parking lot and Tesla donated all four of the charging units. Downtown Cambridge received in-kind support from the City of Cambridge and $2,500 from the Dorchester County Council for installation. Tomey Electric and the City of Cambridge MUC team performed the installation work, and local Custom Welding designed custom mounts for the charging units. Additional financial support from anonymous donors helped develop a reserve fund to cover the cost of electricity during a substantial pilot period. Downtown Cambridge hopes to collect more information about the impact of the service with a QR code user survey posted at the charging station. Station users will be asked to support the electric fund by making a donation towards the organization.

Next steps include the installation of solar panels to support the units and a new, greener site design for the parking lot.
