Main Spotlight: How Communities Are Reimagining Streets for Everyone
Learn how Main Streets in Philadelphia are using active transportation to foster healthier and more connected communities.
The City of Leeds, AL welcomed a new downtown mural over the holidays that has brought a sense of excitement and anticipation for the continuing efforts to focus on the Leeds downtown district. The mural enhances a community space that is being used more and more for special events.
The project was funded by TA Services, a full-service premier integrated solutions provider for domestic and international Freight Brokerage, Managed Transportation, Third-Party Warehousing & Fulfillment, and Cross-Border Logistics needs. TA Services’ headquarters resides in Leeds, AL, adjacent to the new mural. Scott Schell, President and CEO, said, “We wanted to give back to our employees, the city, and the community that has so graciously welcomed and accommodated us from the start.”
The Artist, Scott Harvey, shared the inspiration for the artwork on his Facebook page, “The old steam train is painted on the right. The small trees in front and behind the stagecoach are cedar saplings symbolizing growth and the old name of our town Cedar Grove. The stagecoach represents the historic stagecoach route that ran through Leeds. The feather to the left of Est. represents the Native Americans who took part in trade and helping develop the foundation of Leeds. There is a small wave to the right of 1887, representing the home of the Green Wave. Lots of history in our town to be proud of.”
Both Scott Harvey and Scott Schell serve on the Leeds Main Street Board of Directors and have a heart for the Leeds community.
The mural was painted by a Birmingham-based company, Mammoth Mural Company, and are responsible many other art pieces around the Birmingham area.
If you want to see it in person, you can find it at the corner of 8th Street and Parkway Drive in Leeds, AL.
Since Leeds’ designation in June of this year, there are 4 net new businesses in the downtown district, 5 new jobs created, $53,607 of private dollars and $89,822 public dollars invested in downtown, and 1,548 volunteer hours accumulated. Leeds Main Street is committed to the Leeds community and focused on making meaningful change.
