The GM on Main Street Grant Program has awarded five $60,000 grants to nonprofit organizations and municipal government entities near GM facilities and to a tribal community within the Main Street network to support innovative transportation initiatives in their local districts. Presented by General Motors, the GM on Main Street Grant Program champions place-based solutions that prioritize pedestrian-friendly infrastructure, inclusive urban design, and sustainable mobility.

The 2025 grant recipients include the City of Elgin (Elgin, TX), Heart of Scottsville, Inc. (Scottsville, KY), the City of Avondale Estates (Avondale Estates, GA), the Unified Government of Wyandotte County/Kansas City Transportation Department (Kansas City, KS), and the Forest County Potawatomi Community (Forest County, WI). We are pleased to share that four of this year’s grantees are Accredited or Affiliate Main Street America programs or part of the Main Street network through the Thriving Communities Program. Their pioneering projects will serve as replicable models for communities nationwide, revitalizing streetscapes and fostering vibrant, people-centered public spaces.

GM on Main Street has become a catalyst for place-based programs in our hometowns and communities across the U.S.,” said Alexis Brandl, Road Safety Grantmaking Lead at GM. We’re excited to continue to work with Main Street America as they help support nonprofit and municipality projects that prioritize road safety in the community.”

Last year, the GM on Main Street Grant Program awarded five $50, 000 grants – see the list of grantees here.

The 2025 GM on Main Street grantees are:

City of Elgin | Elgin, TX

The City of Elgin has been awarded a GM on Main Street grant for their Crosswalk of Unity project, which will enhance pedestrian safety and accessibility in downtown Elgin, Texas. The proposed vibrant painted crosswalk, located at the intersection of Main Street and Avenue C, will span an entire block in front of the newly expanded Veterans Memorial Park. The project aims to bridge historical divides while improving safety for families, children, and individuals with disabilities accessing the park.

Elgin’s downtown is known for its wide streets, which facilitate both vehicle traffic and pedestrian movement. However, current crosswalks near the park are either poorly marked or nonexistent, posing safety risks for pedestrians. The Crosswalk of Unity will address this challenge by creating a bright, welcoming path for park-goers and the community, enhancing both safety and awareness of pedestrian rights.

Veterans Memorial Park, spanning approximately 15 acres, is a prominent community hub that provides a variety of amenities, including walking trails, picnic areas, a sports field, and an inclusive playground. This project will ensure safer access to these amenities, encourage more walking and community engagement, and promote inclusivity in Elgin’s vibrant, diverse community.

Through increased pedestrian safety, the Crosswalk of Unity aims to improve the quality of life for Elgin’s residents while encouraging greater foot traffic to local businesses, helping to revitalize the downtown area and foster a stronger sense of community.

Heart of Scottsville, Inc. | Scottsville, KY

The Heart of Scottsville, Inc. has been awarded a GM on Main Street grant for the Scottsville Public Square Raised Crosswalks Project, designed to improve pedestrian safety and accessibility in the heart of downtown Scottsville, Kentucky. The project will install elevated crosswalks at key intersections, prioritizing safety and ease of movement for pedestrians navigating the busy square.

The Scottsville Public Square is the bustling core of the local community, blending historic charm with contemporary amenities. Neighborhood businesses contribute to the area’s dynamic atmosphere, which hosts a range of community events and activities throughout the year. However, pedestrian safety has become a growing concern, as the existing crosswalks are positioned too far from where vehicles stop, creating a dangerous gap for foot traffic.

The proposed raised crosswalks will address this issue by improving visibility and reducing the distance between vehicles and pedestrians. This improvement will facilitate access to downtown businesses, public services, and community events, making the area safer and more inviting for residents and visitors. This initiative is part of the Heart of Scottsville’s broader vision to revitalize the downtown area while preserving its historic character.

City of Avondale Estates | Avondale Estates, GA

The City of Avondale Estates has been awarded a GM on Main Street grant for their Custom Bike Rack and Wayfinding Program. This project will enhance the city’s commitment to sustainability and multimodal transportation by adding unique, themed bike racks and wayfinding elements throughout the city. The racks will be placed in high-traffic areas, including public rights-of-way and parking lots, strategically located near areas with significant business activity and high site activation.

The City of Avondale Estates, established in the 1920s and known for its Tudor-style village design, is home to a diverse citizenry. The city is blending its historical charm with modern needs, as it prepares for new developments such as an affordable senior housing project. Avondale Estates’ economy is fueled by the auto, beer, and restaurant industries, yet the city faces the challenge of balancing its auto-oriented infrastructure with the need for pedestrian and bicycle-friendly spaces.

This project will play a key role in the city’s broader Complete Street Project, which aims to transform a five-lane highway into a more inclusive three-lane main street with bike lanes and sidewalks. By introducing these custom bike racks, the city is taking a significant step in encouraging alternative transportation and promoting sustainable practices, while also improving the overall experience for residents and visitors alike. The bike racks and wayfinding elements will not only enhance the aesthetics of the city but will also make it easier and safer for people to bike into the downtown area, fostering a more connected and vibrant community.

Unified Government Transportation Department | Kansas City, KS

The Unified Government of Wyandotte County/Kansas City Transportation Department has been awarded a GM on Main Street grant for the Transit Hub Revitalization: Connecting Community & Creativity project. Located at the 7th & Minnesota Transit Hub in Wyandotte County, Kansas, this project aims to transform a high-traffic public space into a more inclusive, accessible, and culturally reflective transit hub. The revitalized hub will incorporate public art, new seating, and community-driven design elements to enhance the space for all users.

The transit hub is centrally located near local businesses, the Kansas City, Kansas Public Library, and key community institutions, making it a vital connector for residents and visitors. With two bus shelters, digital kiosks, benches, and trash receptacles, the space serves as a central access point for both bus and car traffic. The project will also feature a mural on the retaining wall, reflecting the area’s rich culture and history.

A core focus of the project is ensuring that the hub is accessible to all. Through community engagement surveys and focus groups, the design will prioritize the needs of frequent transit users, people with disabilities, the elderly, and families with young children. The seating design will incorporate universal features, ensuring comfort and ease of use for everyone, while anti-loitering elements will maintain safety and functionality.

By combining community input, artistic expression, and inclusive design, this revitalization project aims to make the 7th & Minnesota Transit Hub a more welcoming space that truly reflects the diversity and spirit of Wyandotte County.

Forest County Potawatomi Community | Forest County, Wisconsin

The Forest County Potawatomi Community (FCPC) has been awarded a GM on Main Street grant for the Në Mnobmadzëwen Myéwés (Pathway to Wellness Mural Project), which aims to beautify the FCPC’s Pathway to Wellness, a new bicycle and pedestrian trail set to be constructed in Forest County, Wisconsin. The proposed mural will grace a prominent concrete retaining wall within the government campus in Crandon, Wisconsin, near the main highway corridor, offering an expansive 800+ square feet of space for vibrant public art. This north-facing wall, shaded for most of the day, will preserve the mural’s vividness, making it an enduring symbol of the Tribe’s heritage.

The Pathway to Wellness is a significant initiative rooted in both cultural and safety concerns, initiated by the Tribe in response to safety recommendations from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT). The Tribe’s long-standing commitment to improving pedestrian and cyclist safety led to the creation of this project, which seeks to merge wellness with cultural expression. The mural itself will reflect the Tribe’s rich cultural history while contributing to the overall sense of place for Tribal members and visitors.

In addition to providing aesthetic value, the mural will be part of a broader effort to revitalize the community, helping to increase tourism, stimulate local commerce, and enhance the quality of life for area residents. The Pathway to Wellness trail, once completed, is projected to attract 5,000 – 7,000 annual visitors, promoting wellness through increased physical activity and a stronger connection to Potawatomi culture. Through this mural, the FCPC seeks to create a tangible link between past and present, strengthening community bonds while showcasing the Tribe’s resilience and radiant cultural identity.
